Heard Museum: Hidden Doors

Project Overview

The Heard Museum recently removed bleachers from its auditorium but needed four doors to access the recessed areas that formerly held the bleachers. These doors weren’t meant to be noticed, but instead had to fade out of sight. The CK Valenti team built the doors you see on either side of the archway from MDF and plywood subframes to make them rigid and light.  The doors were then trimmed with the base material in the rest of the room to help the door blend with its surroundings. The last detail you cannot see is the hardware – the doors are kept closed with push to open latches.

Sometimes it’s the beauty of a piece that you admire, and sometimes it’s about what you cannot see…
